MICROBIOLOGY The concept of pathogenicity. Diagnosis of the main causative agents: central nervous system, blood circulation, upper and lower respiratory, urinary tract, intestinal tract, genital tract. Nosocomial infections. Structure and classification of viruses. Methods of study and virological investigation. Viral hepatitis A, B, C, D, G. HIV infection. The herpes viruses Parasitology Overview of general concepts of symbiont, parasite, definitive host, intermediate host, differential diagnosis, laboratory diagnosis. Intestinal and urogenital protozoa. Life cycle and pathology of intestinal amebae (Entamoeba histolytica) and outlines of non-pathogenic amebae; intestinal flagellates (Giardia lamblia), intestinal coccidia (Cryptosporidium parvum) and urogenital flagellates (Trichomonas vaginalis). Blood and tissue protozoa: African Trypanosomiasis (Tripanosoma brucei gambiense and rhodesiense), American Trypanosomiasis (Tripanosoma cruzi), Leishmaniasis, Malaria, Toxoplasmosis. Helminths: Classification and general concepts; morphology, life cycles, and pathogenic mechanisms of:Liver, intestinal and lung Trematodes (Fasciola); blood trematodes (Schistosoma); Cestodes (Taenia, Hymenolepis, Echinococcus); intestinal and tissue Nematodes (Enterobius, Ascaris, Trichuris, Ancylostoma, Necator, Strongyloides, Wuchereria, Loa, Onchocerca). Arthropods Basic concepts on arthropods of medical importance; temporary and permanent ectoparasites (Sarcoptes, Argas, Ixodes, Pediculus, Pulex, hematophagous diptera).
Prerequisites
Admission test for access to the Course which consists of a written test based on multiple choice questions.
