Course program
At the end of the course, students will be able to describe: the structure and function of DNA; the flow of information from DNA to proteins: transcription, RNA splicing, the genetic code, and translation; the organization of the human genome; genes and gene mutations, including the origin of mutations, point mutations, deletions, insertions, splice site mutations, and dynamic mutations; human chromosomes: number, structure, and function; chromosomal abnormalities and the normal vs. pathological human karyotype; the relationships between gametogenesis, meiosis, and segregation; Mendelian inheritance: hereditary traits, gene, allele, locus; Mendel’s laws: dominance and recessiveness, phenotype and genotype; pedigree analysis and its symbols; patterns of Mendelian inheritance and the classification of genetic diseases; examples of hereditary monogenic disorders with Mendelian transmission: autosomal dominant, autosomal recessive, X-linked dominant and recessive; non-Mendelian inheritance.
