Course objectives

Upon completion of the course the student must know the meaning of the term monitoring and the semeiologic techniques for the monitoring of the oral cavity: the anamnesis, the physical semiotics and the instrumental one; how, when and why to use the semeiologic techniques of monitoring for the primary, secondary and tertiary prevention of oral mucosa pathologies. At the end of the course the student must be able to do a correct monitoring of the oral cavity through the knowledge and use of the instruments necessary to visit the patient in relation to the dental hygienist tasks in order to detect, recognize and record any dento-periodontal and oral mucous pathologies and know how to fill in the medical records of the dental hygienist.

Program - Frequency - Exams

Course program
Monitoring: definition; classification. Self-assessment scales (Visual Analogue, Numerical, Verbal Scales). (2 hours) Indicators: characteristics and types; the main indicators for oral cavity monitoring; risk factors and risk assessment; indicators in periodontal and implant risk assessment; tumour and infectious disease markers. (2 hours) Semiological techniques for dental, periodontal, and oral mucosal monitoring: – Anamnesis: general history-taking methodology; types of questions and history-taking. (2 hours) – Physical semiotics: objective examination of the oral mucosa and dental, periodontal examination (reviews). (1 hour) – Instrumental semiotics: conventional dental radiology, sampling for cytological examination; biopsy; sampling for culture and antibiogram; oral and oropharyngeal swab; vital stains; Detection techniques using a light source (chemiluminescence and autofluorescence). (3 hours) Monitoring as a tool for preventing oral mucosal diseases: monitoring in the primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention of oral cancer; monitoring in the primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention of infectious diseases. (3 hours) Monitoring of a therapeutic program (1 hour) Monitoring of wound healing in periodontal and implant surgery (2 hours) Periodontal monitoring and periodontal risk assessment (2 hours) Implant monitoring and implant risk assessment (2 hours)
