Archaeology and cultural heritage

Course objectives

In line with the educational objectives of the CdS, the course aims to provide the fundamentals of Classical Archaeology, facilitating the achievement of knowledge and analytical skills that complement and/or reinforce the skills achieved in the first cycle of studies, enabling the student to conduct research, including original research, on cultural expressions of the classical world, as well as to independently analyze, understand and interpret archaeological spaces, monuments and material culture in their artistic, architectural, socioeconomic and political context of reference. The course provides an in-depth study of the methods, objectives and content of Classical Archaeology, enabling the student to acquire a critical knowledge of the architectural and urbanistic manifestations, artistic production and craftsmanship of Greek and Roman civilization and, at the same time, an ability to communicate what has been learned to both a scientific and a non-specialized audience. During the lectures, the examination of a selection of contexts, monuments and artifacts useful for an interpretation of the anthropological and social aspects of the classical world will be proposed. In relation to the case studies considered, the tools adopted for the relevant management, protection and enhancement will also be addressed, and finally, space will be devoted to the application of modern technologies in the humanities and specifically the promotion of archaeological heritage.
