Digital Modeling and representation methods

Course objectives

The course is aimed at the acquisition of the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary for the control of the construction space of building systems through the critical exercise of model representation - geometric, graphic, computer. Upon completion of the course, the student should be able to solve solid modeling of complex shapes, including parametric ones, knowing how to critically set them up with reference to the fundamentals of solid geometry. - Knowledge and Ability to Understand At the end of the course, the student should have acquired knowledge and comprehension skills, as well as abilities to support, from a theoretical-methodological point of view, the process of knowledge of the building system through the tools of drawing and representation. In addition, the student should have learned an adequate and specific knowledge of the tools, procedures and implementation mechanisms to operate in the field of surveying and virtual modeling, through the different moments of learning in the classroom and verification both in the field and in data processing. Feedback on the knowledge acquired will take place through in itinere tests and with the examination test. - Ability to apply knowledge and understanding Upon completion of the course, the student should demonstrate mastery of an integrated experimental and analytical-design approach for the finalization of the acquired knowledge and understanding to solve complex problems, such as that of the acquisition of real-world context information and its translation into two- and three-dimensional representations. In particular, the student should be able to experiment with the main methods of 3D digital surveying and the translation of surveyed data into codified forms of representation, using the acquired methods, techniques, tools, procedures, and implementation mechanisms. These skills will be tested during the course of the semester through group and individual work, during the in situ activity, and through the in itinere and final tests. - Autonomy of judgment. At the end of the teaching, the student will be expected to demonstrate the ability to acquire knowledge and experience, to evaluate them and to rework them for the purpose of forming an autonomous and original judgment. In particular, it must demonstrate skills in the autonomous management of the path of acquisition and processing of 3D data up to their translation into models and virtual representations, with the aim of being able to independently manage the process of digital survey of the existing and its virtual representation, in support and verification of the building project. The achievement of such critical and autonomous judgment skills will be acquired in the course of experimental and design activities, through classroom simulations and concrete experiences. Verification of knowledge will be operated, in addition, through the in itinere tests and the final examination. - Communication skills. At the end of the teaching, the student will have to demonstrate, against the acquisition and operational ability with respect to the theoretical-methodological and technical knowledge proper to the teaching, to be able to communicate it, in an effective and innovative way, translating the contents of the course and the results obtained in the survey phase through the use of communication tools proper to the field of representation and different forms of language, verbal and written-graphic. The achievement of these skills will be acquired progressively during the course, while the verification of these skills will be operated through the in itinere tests and the final test. - Learning ability Upon completion of the course, the student will be expected to demonstrate a high capacity for autonomous learning, enabling them to continuously update and increase their knowledge and skills in the field of surveying, modeling and digital representation. The acquisition of these skills will take place through the specific theoretical contributions given by the lecturer during the course, aimed at expanding the framework of skills to access innovative methodologies, tools and applications, and through constant participation in practical activities in the classroom and outside. The verification of skills will take place, above all, through the examination test, structured to highlight autonomy in organizing one's own learning.

Course program
The main objective of the course is the integrated use of surveying and representation tools for the knowledge of building systems and interior and exterior spaces. In particular, the course will address the two main paths of surveying and representation to support the design process: on the one hand, the digital translation of the existing reality through 3D surveying techniques, as a tool for knowledge and analysis of the existing architecture. On the other, the design and construction of vector and graphic models to support the representation and communication of the architectural project. The integration of theoretical, practical lectures and classroom exercises will enable the student to understand, critically analyze and acquire skills related to the main methods of digital representation and modeling of the built heritage. The potential of drawing as a fundamental tool for investigation and communication in plan and space will be experienced. The course aims to develop in the student the ability to imagine and control forms in space and to know how to represent them through the construction of models
