Course program
Editorial Graphic Design Course (or Design Publishing Course) Prof. Andrea Mattone Goals: The courses’ main goals are: * TO KNOW the editorial graphics world, its different sectors, the printout process of designing and realization of a printout, the history and the evolution of both newspapers and magazines. * TO UNDERSTAND the dynamics of the publishing project from the customer's assignment to the delivery of the final project, passing through all stages of the design, formal and aesthetic as well as technical. * TO REALIZE a series of printouts with different requisites, according to the readership, the format, and the fonts. The course is intended to introduce the students to the editorial design, providing them with the theoretical tools for designing, via a series of specific software, a wide range of printouts with different requisites. Teaching tools The teaching tools are articulated as follows: 1)Theoretical lectures This part of the course will be organized so that there is a practical approach to the project. Works of different designers will be shown to the students, ranging from logos to book covers, magazines and newspapers. These works shall be discussed and addressed from both the formal perspective and the making of the objects per se, considering how these have been conceived, designed, and which techniques have been used to realize them. 2) Practical lessons Students will be asked to realize projects of various kinds in order to explore and hone their expertise in the field of editorial design. It is a process that will allow students to get to a definitive project on at least three variations, with respect to graphic items: a logo; a poster or cover for a book; and a project for a magazine. 3) The final project analysis. Developed in groups, together with the practical lessons, the final project will determine the students’ final evaluation in the course.
