International experiences

Sapienza offers numerous opportunities for study, research, and traineeships abroad: both within Europe and beyond, for short stays or longer periods, thesis research abroad, and much more.

Study periods in European countries: Erasmus+

Erasmus+ promotes transnational cooperation among higher education institutions; it funds mobility for study purposes (SMS) across all disciplines and study levels (including PhD) and fosters the academic recognition of studies within the European Higher Education Area. The Erasmus+ programme allows students to attend courses and pass exams, with full recognition in their academic career, or to carry out research in preparation for their undergraduate or doctoral thesis.

Traineeships in European countries: Erasmus+ Traineeship

Erasmus+ traineeship mobility allows students to undertake internships in companies, training centres, and research institutions located in participating countries. The programme supports full-time traineeships abroad, recognised as an integral part of the study programme. Traineeships may also be carried out after graduation, provided that the selection takes place before the degree is awarded. The number of months for traineeship mobility is added to those for Erasmus study mobility, up to the maximum allowed by the programme.

The CIVIS European Alliance, “A European Civic University”

Sapienza is a partner of the CIVIS European Alliance, A European Civic University, funded by the European Union and established together with:

  • Free University of Brussels
  • University of Tübingen
  • Autonomous University of Madrid
  • Aix-Marseille Université
  • National and Kapodistrian University of Athens
  • University of Bucharest
  • Stockholm University
  • University of Glasgow
  • Paris Lodron University Salzburg
  • Université de Lausanne

The alliance has launched a wide range of joint study programmes across the 11 European campuses to create a true European Higher Education Area and contribute to building a strong, multilingual European knowledge society. Training is research-based and incorporates innovative teaching methods, including traditional Erasmus mobility as well as short-term, virtual, and distance mobility.

Study periods in non-EU countries: Overseas Programme

Thanks to funding from the Ministry of University and Research (MUR) and Sapienza’s own resources, each year students have the opportunity to spend a study period abroad, to sit exams or conduct thesis research, at one of the 200+ non-EU institutions with which Sapienza has bilateral agreements. The Overseas mobility scheme provides a monthly contribution of €700 net for the first 5 months and €500 net from the 6th month onwards. The stay abroad must be continuous, lasting no less than 90 days and no longer than two consecutive semesters. Students may only benefit from this contribution once per study cycle, and it is not cumulative with other Sapienza grants.

Study or research periods in non-EU countries: Erasmus+ KA171 International Credit Mobility (ICM)

The Erasmus+ ICM programme, funded by the European Commission, enables students and staff to spend a period abroad for study, thesis research, teaching, or training in non-EU countries. It includes a grant and travel cost coverage. All activities undertaken abroad are recognised upon return to Sapienza, as specified in the Learning Agreement. Student mobility may last from a minimum of 3 to 6 months (extendable up to a maximum of 12 months, with the final 6 months in Zero-EU Grant mode). The ICM grant also covers doctoral research mobility for the same duration. Travel expenses are calculated using the Distance Calculator, based on the distance between the home and host institutions.

Degree Programme Activities

Support for training periods abroad and/or for student international mobility agreements is institutionally provided for all Degree Programmes of the Faculty of Architecture by the Academic Mobility Coordinator for EU Countries (CAM EU), the Academic Mobility Coordinator for non-EU Countries (CAM Extra EU), the Faculty Erasmus Administrative Officer (RAEF), and the Erasmus Office staff.

In particular, the Erasmus Office has activated a helpdesk for outgoing students (EU and non-EU Erasmus), available both in person and online, from Monday to Thursday. Complementing this service, dedicated tutors carry out extensive informational guidance, reaching students directly in class during lectures, presenting the various mobility opportunities, and providing information regarding career-related matters both prior to departure and upon return.
