International experiences

Sapienza offers numerous opportunities for study, research, and internships abroad, both within Europe and outside the EU, for short stays or longer periods, including thesis research abroad and many other mobility options.
Study Periods in European Countries: Erasmus+
Erasmus+ promotes transnational cooperation among higher education institutions and funds mobility for study purposes (SMS) across all disciplines and levels of study (including doctoral programmes), fostering academic recognition within the European Higher Education Area. The Erasmus+ programme enables students to attend courses and sit examinations with full recognition in their academic curriculum, or to carry out research for the preparation of their Bachelor’s, Master’s, or doctoral thesis.

Internships in European Countries: Erasmus+ Traineeship
Erasmus+ traineeship mobility allows students to undertake internships at companies, training centres, and research institutions based in participating countries. The programme enables full-time traineeships abroad, recognised as an integral part of the study programme. Internships may also be carried out after graduation, provided that the selection takes place before the award of the degree. The number of mobility months is cumulative with Erasmus study periods, up to the maximum duration allowed by the programme.

European Alliance CIVIS – “A European Civic University”
Sapienza is a partner of the European Alliance CIVIS – A European Civic University, funded by the European Union and established together with the following universities:

  • Free University of Brussels
  • University of Tübingen
  • Autonomous University of Madrid
  • Aix-Marseille Université
  • National and Kapodistrian University of Athens
  • University of Bucharest
  • Stockholm University
  • University of Glasgow
  • Paris Lodron University of Salzburg
  • University of Lausanne

The alliance has developed a wide range of joint study programmes across its European campuses, with the aim of creating a genuine European Higher Education Area and contributing to the development of a strong, multilingual European knowledge society. Education is research-based and supported by innovative teaching activities, which include, in addition to traditional Erasmus mobility, short-term mobility formats, as well as virtual and distance learning opportunities.

Study Periods in Non-EU Countries: Overseas Programme
Thanks to funding provided by the Italian Ministry of University and Research (MUR) and to Sapienza’s own resources, each year the University offers students the opportunity to spend a study period abroad—either to take exams or to conduct thesis research—at one of the more than 200 non-EU institutions with which Sapienza has bilateral agreements in place. The Overseas mobility programme provides a monthly grant of €700 net for the first five months and €500 net from the sixth month onwards. The continuous stay abroad must last at least 90 days and may extend up to a maximum of two consecutive semesters. The grant may be awarded only once per study cycle and cannot be combined with other Sapienza scholarships.

Study or Research Periods in Non-EU Countries: Erasmus+ KA171 International Credit Mobility (ICM)
The Erasmus+ ICM programme, funded by the European Commission, allows students and academic staff to undertake periods of study or thesis research, as well as teaching or training activities, in non-EU countries. The programme includes a scholarship and travel cost coverage. All activities carried out abroad are fully recognised upon return by the relevant Sapienza academic staff, as specified in the Learning Agreement. Student mobility may last from a minimum of three up to six months, with the possibility of extension up to a maximum of twelve months (the final six months without a grant, under the Zero-EU Grant modality). The ICM grant also covers doctoral-level research mobility for the same duration. Travel expenses are calculated using the Distance Calculator, based on the distance between the home and host institutions.

***Programme Activities (CdS) ***
Assistance for international training periods and student mobility agreements is institutionally provided for all Degree Programmes of the Faculty of Architecture by the Academic Mobility Coordinator for EU Countries – Erasmus (CAM EU), the Academic Mobility Coordinator for non-EU Countries (CAM extra-EU), the Faculty Erasmus Administrative Officer (RAEF), and the Faculty Erasmus Office staff. In particular, the Erasmus Office has also established a help desk for prospective outgoing students (EU and non-EU Erasmus), available both in person and remotely, with office hours from Monday to Thursday.
In synergy with these activities, a structured information tutoring service is carried out through dedicated tutors, reaching students directly in classrooms during teaching hours. This service presents the various international mobility opportunities and provides guidance on issues related to academic careers before departure and upon return.
