Course objectives

The learning objectives of the German language course are to lead the student to: 1. Acquire the necessary skills to communicate easily about various aspects of every day life and also in specific study and work situations in German. 2. Investigate aspects of German civilization and culture. 3. Familiarize themselves with the socio-economic lexicon through authentic texts. 4. Develop learning strategies in order to improve language skills, with a view to lifelong learning. The objectives can be defined in terms of the following levels of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR): • comprehension of written messages: B1/B2 • comprehension of oral messages: B1 • production of written text:s B1 • production of oral messages: B1 (The descriptive content of the skills defined for the various levels is available at: in German (http://europass.cedefop.europa.eu/LanguageSelfAssessmentGrid/de) in Italian (http://europass.cedefop.europa.eu/LanguageSelfAssessmentGrid/it). EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES Students who have passed the examination will possess: • A mastery of the German language in daily life and study and professional communicative situations. • A knowledge of the most important cultural aspects of German-speaking countries; • Learning strategies which allow them to continue the learning of German in an independent way.

Program - Frequency - Exams

Course program
The course is intended for absolute beginners and aims to enable students to cope with reading texts written in German of medium difficulty (roughly corresponding to level B1-B1+ of the European Framework of Reference for Language Learning). To this end, basic knowledge of grammar will be provided (phonology and pronunciation; conjugation of all modes and subjects of auxiliary verbs, regular and irregular verbs, modal verbs, separable and inseparable verbs; description of noun genders, inflection of articles and nouns personal pronouns and their inflection; syntax of the main sentence, syntax of the secondary sentence; main prepositions of place and time and their use; position verbs; negative and interrogative sentences; declension of adjectives; hypothetical and relative sentences; implicit secondary sentences and their syntax; passive diathesis. Grammar rules will be explained in a constant comparison with the reading of short authentic texts and in a constant classroom interaction and verification of the acquired skills. Attendance is strongly recommended.
Prerequisites
The course is open to all interested ones; no special prior knowledge is required.

Dreyer, R. Schmitt, Die neue Gelbe, German Grammar with exercises, Hueber, Ismaning, latest edition. Teaching materials are available on the lecturer's page; texts already in the student's possession may also be suitable for exam preparation provided they enable at least B1 level to be reached.
Frequency
Attendance is free but strongly recommended.
Exam mode
The examination consists of a written test on grammar (test without dictionary) and comprehension of a written text (with dictionary). The written examination lasts a total of no more than two hours. Students can replace the test of written comprehension thorugh a short oral conversation (self-presentation, description of the family and of the main ordinary activities).
Lesson mode
Lectures with in-class verification of acquired knowledge; reading of small written texts and acquisition of vocabulary; listening to small vocal texts (e.g. songs) and acquisition of correct pronunciation and vocabulary: homework with in-class correction or self-correction.
