Course objectives
The course aims to provide basic preparation for the study of population: both in terms of methodology, mainly statistical, and on the interpretation, mainly economic.

Course program
Basic notions of descriptive statistics. Construction and interpretation of tables and graphs. Simple indicators of the distributions of qualitative and quantitative variables. Data sources: guide to the use of the information assets of official statistics. Logic and techniques of demographic analysis. The analysis of the renewal and extinction of generations. Consistency, increase and structure of a population. Birth and fertility rates. Mortality and survival indicators. Mobility and migration. Demographic projections. Demographic methods for analyzing company data. Analysis of stock data and flow of business activities. Economic and social implications of demographic dynamics. Demographic aging and the labor market. Effects of demographic change on the market for goods and services. Population and environment.

Teaching mode
The course includes lectures to transfer the main contents of the course and seminars with external witnesses to stimulate a more focused reflection on specific socio-demographic issues. An intense practical activity is foreseen, also with the aid of IT tools, for learning statistical and demographic analysis techniques and for navigating between data sources.
Frequency
There is no obligation to attend, but participation in the statistical-demographic laboratory activities is strongly recommended
Exam mode
The exam takes place in written form and consists of two parts:
1) exercises aimed at evaluating the skills acquired in the acquisition and processing of statistical and demographic data
2) Answers and short comments to 3 questions, aimed at assessing the level of learning and in-depth analysis of the issues addressed during the course
