THREE-DIMENSIONAL MODELING

Course objectives

The aim of the Course of Biotechnology of human reproduction is to provide a specific training in the field of gametology and fertility. In this course of study we will discuss the main aspects of the organization and regulation of the human genome, mutation, cytogenetics. The molecular aspects will be developed for monogenic and complex diseases, and basic information about the instability of the human genome. Human genetics and its practical applications will also be described (genetic counseling, prenatal diagnosis, genetic screening). It will also address the question concerning the causes of mutations as responsible for hereditary diseases. Provide the basis for the analysis of the molecular mechanisms underlying genetic diseases, pathophysiological and molecular mechanisms leading to the onset of the diseases. Integrate the programs of the other courses and modules that refer to the scientific-disciplinary sector General Pathology (MED / 04). Acquire the ability to connect the molecular alterations with the pathogenesis of diseases at higher integration levels (cells, tissues, organs, body). Provide the conceptual basis for the design of personalized and gene therapy approaches.

Flagellar abnormalities in motility disorders
Prerequisites
At the beginning of the didactic activity the student must know the basics of genetics, biochemistry, molecular and cellular biology. The student must also be able to understand scientific English and to read and understand articles in English
Books
L. Gandini, A. Lenzi -BIOTECNOLOGIE DELLA RIPRODUZIONE UMANA- Carocci Editore L. Gandini,F.Lombardo, D.Paoli, A.Lenzi- DIAGNOSTICA PER IMMAGINI DELLO SPERMATOZOO UMANO- Carocci Editore - Chemes EH, Rawe YV. Sperm pathology: a step beyond descriptive morphology. Origin, characterization and fertility potential of abnormal sperm phenotypes in infertile men. Hum Reprod Update. 2003 Sep-Oct;9(5):405-28.
Teaching mode
Educational activities are organised as class-room lectures with concurrent laboratory practice, conduction of short essays, power point presentations, group practice, videoclips projection, attendance to specific seminars, self-evaluation tests. These set of activities will provide the adequate theoretical and practical tools decribed in the main objectives.
Frequency
Attendance to the teachings is compulsory.
Exam mode
The evaluation will consist of an oral exam with the possibility of presentation and discussion on powerpoint of a course topic; there will also be the possibility to discuss a scientific article relevant to the course topics, chosen by the student, as an integral part of the exam. The final judgment will take into account course attendance, active participation, reasoning and self-study skills shown during the course. An overall assessment will be made on both modules of the course, which will take into consideration all the theoretical and practical aspects discussed during the course and the actual achievement of the planned training objectives.
