Course objectives

Familiarize yourself with the basics of scientific research, gaining experience in: Bibliographic research on the main search engines used in the biomedical field; Preparation of a scientific project; Editing and presentation of scientific texts to experts and in a popular format; Graph analysis: interpretation and preparation.

Formal lessons: Main elements of a research project: Problem identification – Working hypothesis – Definition of experimental methodologies – Data collection – Analysis and interpretation of results – Conclusions Types of scientific articles: research articles, review articles, case studies, clinical studies, – Typical elements of scientific articles: abstract, summary, introduction, subjects and methods, results, discussion, conclusions Use of graphs and figures in scientific communication Fundamentals of statistical analysis Interactive activities: Definition of a research topic – Bibliography search – Formulation of the working hypothesis – Examples of data analysis – Preparation of different types of graphs – Presentation of the research project to the class and discussion

Course program
The course objectives will be pursued through lectures, individual work and collegial classroom discussion. Lecture topics: - The different types of research: Experimental research, meta-analysis, survey, descriptive research (case reports); basic and clinical research. The different types of scientific article: Experimental and review. Peer review as the foundation of scientific communication - Selection of bibliography on major search engines used in the biomedical field - Statistical methods for data analysis - Analysis of graphs: interpretation and preparation - Presentation of an article and its discussion - Preparation of scientific and popular written texts - How to write a research project Topics of individual papers - Preparation of simple scientific texts (Abstracts, results, popular articles). Preparation of different types of graphs Revision of colleagues' work Topics of collegial work in the classroom - Presentation and discussion of individual papers

Frequency
Attendance is compulsory. The number of hours to be achieved must correspond to a minimum of 67% in order to be able to sit the profit examinations.
Exam mode
The overall assessment will be based on an oral examination and on the on-going evaluation of the work produced and participation in classroom discussions.

Lesson mode
In the first part of the course, the teaching activity will consist of lectures. In the second part, the teaching activity will be conducted in laboratory form, with individual and classroom activities, for the presentation and collegial discussion of the papers prepared by individual students
