Course objectives

Knowledge of the areas of intervention of preventive medicine, with particular reference to lifestyles. Use of the most well-known risk scores to carry out a global health assessment. Conscious and critical use of the scientific literature of reference with particular reference to the interdisciplinary one. At the end of the module the student must be able to: know the main congenital and acquired heart diseases in pediatric and developmental age and the main genetic syndromes associated with congenital heart diseases. Recognize the main differences between the pediatric and adult ECG. Know the echocardiographic anatomy of a normal heart and of hearts with the most common congenital malformations. Know how an exercise test and a cardiopulmonary test are performed and interpreted. Know the medical and surgical treatment of the main congenital and acquired heart diseases in pediatric and developmental age.

Course program
• Congenital heart disease: basics of cardiac embryology; principles of pathophysiology and classification. • Congenital heart disease within the main genetic syndromes. • Acquired heart disease in childhood and adolescence: rheumatic heart disease; Kawasaki disease; infective endocarditis. • Instrumental investigations: peculiarities of the pediatric electrocardiogram; echocardiographic approach to the normal heart and the heart with congenital malformations; exercise testing; cardiopulmonary exercise testing. • Basics of medical, surgical, and interventional treatment of congenital heart disease. • Follow-up of patients with congenital heart disease during the natural history and after surgical correction.
