ECONOMICS OF INSTITUTIONS AND DEVELOPMENT
Course objectives
The course aims to provide students with necessary tools to understand economic characteristics of the developed and the less developed countries. We will analyze the causes, the main guidelines on the subject and the factors determining the transition from underdevelopment to development, wit particular attention to the institutional context

Course program
The causes, the main orientations on the issue, and the factors determining the passage from underdevelopment to development will be analyzed with particular attention to the institutional context. The topics covered will concern the accumulation of capital, population growth, technical progress, the endowment of human capital, international trade, and the distribution of income. We will analyze the role played by inequalities, within the same country and between different countries, in the evolution of economic systems and finally, we will deal with the issue of health as an investment for economic development and growth.
The teaching will be divided into phases:
the preparatory phase will be dedicated to recalling some basic notions of economics useful for the course (4 hours)
the introductory phase will cover the role of institutions in development and growth (8 hours)
a first phase will concern economic growth, growth theories, and the difference with development theories (10)
a second phase will deal with inequality, the indicators to measure it, inequality between nations and within nations (12)
a third phase will be dedicated to health as capital (8 hours)
then we will proceed with analysis and measurement of poverty (8 hours)
intangible factors of development (8 hours)
finance for development and foreign debt crisis (8 hours)
finally, the burden of disease and the sustainability of health systems (6 hours)

Knowledge of the basic elements of Economics.

Teaching mode
Over the semester, the topics will be addressed in frontal and online lessons. This second modality will depend on the possibility of access to the faculty according to the health emergency measures.
For online lessons, the Classroom and Meet platform will be used.
The lectures will be integrated with videos, seminars held by experts also recognized outside the University, and sharing of readings specifically indicated by the teacher during the course.

Exam mode
The exam takes place in two phases. A written test consisting of two open-ended questions is followed by an oral exam on the topics included in the program. The time available for the written exam is 40 minutes.
This examination method allows us to verify both the provisions of the Dublin Descriptors 1 and 2 and the mastery of the language and clarity of presentation.
The weight of the written test constitutes 60% of the final result.
