Course objectives

Knowledge and understanding: The course aims to provide students with an adequate knowledge of the general principles and rules of German public and private law. Applying knowledge and understanding: By the end of the course, students should be able to express the general principles and rules of the German legal system with a full command of legal German. Making judgements: Students are expected to have developed a sufficiently autonomous ability to analyse German public and private law by the end of the course. Communication skills: By the end of the course, students should be able to explain the German legal concepts they have learnt using the correct terminology. Learning skills: Students should be able to continue studying the German legal system and demonstrate the knowledge they have acquired.

Program - Frequency - Exams

Course program
The objective of the course is to master the command of the German legal language both in writing and orally by studying the German legal system. The course is divided into two modules. The first module (3 CFU) is intended to be a general introduction to German law and will cover the system of sources of law, the organisation of justice, the formation of jurists, the foundations of German public and private law. The second module (3CFU) will cover more specifically the law of obligations and contracts.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of the German language (A2).

G. Robbers, Einführung in das deutsche Recht, Nomos, only the chosen parts indicated by the lecturer.
Frequency
Attendance to the course is optional.
Exam mode
The final examination will consist of an oral exam on a legal text taken from a topic covered during the course. Students who have attended the classes will have the option of alternatively discussing a short dissertation on a topic of their choice.
Lesson mode
The course consists of discussions of legal texts, reading and comprehension exercises, including writing and grammar.
