Course program
First part
Introduction to urban and regional planning; economic development, underdevelopment,
sustainable development, and various forms of planning; concepts of landscape, environment, land
and territory; functionalistic approach, holistic approach, complexity; graphic language,
cartography, thematic maps; Geographic Information Systems and Information Systems. (15
hours)
Second part
The main instruments of planning in the Italian law system: the cycle of compulsory purchase,
urban planning “equalization”, structural plan and operation plan; ecological planning and the
relationship between analysis and project in the construction of planning processes. (15 hours)
Third part
Italian homogeneous zones and town planning standards; morphological approach and urban
structure; mobility infrastructures; the vicious circle of private and public transportation and the
role of park and ride sites; (15 hours)
Fourth part
Urban Geography and central places theory; areal model and network model; local economic
development problems; land suitability, land capability, elements of landscape ecology.
Exercises and development of a project concerning a structural municipal plan (15 hours)
