Course objectives
The course intends to provide the students with the basic knowledge on the environmental processes and systems to control the pollution phenomena, considering both the design and operation criteria as well as the tools for automation and optimal management also remotely.

Course program
Module 1 – Introduction to Environmental Sanitary Engineering
Environmental sanitary engineering and its application areas, with a focus on the integrated water cycle and Italian regulations. Includes basic chemistry and biology concepts and analysis of parameters for water characterization.
Module 2 – Wastewater Treatment
Types of wastewater, relevant regulations, and their characteristics. Overview of main physical and biological treatments, operation of a wastewater treatment plant, disinfection processes, sludge management, and control systems.
Module 3 – Drinking Water Treatment
Drinking water quality according to European and Italian standards, water sources, and the necessary treatments to meet quality requirements. Description of drinking water treatment plants, control parameters, and process automation.
Module 4 – Waste Management
Regulations, classification, and characterization of waste. Management phases, physical, biological, and thermal treatments, final disposal, and environmental monitoring, with case studies from real plants.
