Topografia
Course objectives
The course will provide the basis for the knowledge and management of terrestrial data. The national planimetric and altimetric reference surfaces will be defined; global and local reference systems will be explained and also the transformations among these systems. The cartographic representation of Gauss is described and its use in the geodetic application is explained. Furthermore an introduction into the instruments for topographic surveying, such as total station, satellit positioning system ( GPS ) will be provided. The tools for the processing of the measurements obtained through these instruments will be analysed.

Course program
The course enables students to learn the fundamentals of geospatial data doing them able to manage georeferenced data with a focus on cartographic coordinates. It will provide fundamentals of geodesy and map projection to give the students specific knowledge about global and local geodetic Datum and Universal Traverse Mercator. The course enables students to learn the principles and uses of modern surveying practice. It will provide fundamentals of terrestrial (Total station, laser scanner) and spatial (GNSS system) surveying.
Computational techniques and mathematical modeling are presented, including least squares adjustment.
The tasks of the course are the following. Geodetic Datum and Coordinate Systems: the figure of the Earth and geodetic surfaces; global and local datum and global and local coordinate systems. UTM map projection. Applications of geodetic surveying on UTM map. Introduction to GIS, data model in GIS, Datum used in GIS, Theories and uses of ground and satellite-based surveying and its integration. Computational statistical techniques. Mathematical modeling and least squares adjustment.

Course attendance is strongly recommended.
Exam mode
The exam is based on a written test that is required to manipulate, transform and represent a different kind of terrestrial data. It is realized by means of a personal computer and using GIS software and Excel sheet. An oral discussion will follow the written test. Student has to deliver a map as required in the test and an Excel sheet with all the calculation.
The course includes several assignments (small projects) provided by means of the Elearning platform that have to be delivered and will be evaluated during the course (until +3 points on the final mark will be provided if there is a proved active participation during the lesson).
