International experiences
Sapienza offers numerous opportunities for study, research, and internships abroad – both within and outside of Europe – for short stays or longer periods, thesis work abroad, and much more.
Study periods in European countries: Erasmus+
Erasmus+ promotes transnational cooperation among higher education institutions; it funds student mobility for study purposes (SMS) in all disciplines and levels of education (including PhD), and supports the academic recognition of studies within the European Higher Education Area.
The Erasmus+ programme allows students to attend courses and take exams, with full academic recognition, or to conduct research in preparation for their bachelor's or doctoral thesis.

Internships in European countries: Erasmus+ Traineeship
Erasmus+ mobility for traineeships allows students to carry out internships at companies, training centers, or research institutions in participating countries. The programme enables students to undertake full-time internships abroad that are officially recognized as part of their academic programme.
Traineeships can also be carried out after graduation, provided that the selection process takes place before the degree is awarded. The months spent abroad through traineeships are added to those spent under Erasmus+ study mobility, up to the maximum allowed by the programme.

Study periods in non-EU countries: Overseas Programme
Thanks to funding from the Italian Ministry of University and Research (MUR) and its own resources, Sapienza offers students the opportunity each year to spend a study period abroad – to take exams or conduct thesis research – at one of the 200+ non-EU institutions with which it holds bilateral agreements.
The Overseas programme provides a monthly grant of €700 net for the first 5 months, and €500 net from the 6th month onwards.
The stay abroad must be continuous, with a minimum duration of 90 days and a maximum of 2 consecutive semesters.
Students may receive the grant only once per study cycle, and the scholarship cannot be combined with other Sapienza grants.

Study or research in non-EU countries: Erasmus+ KA171 International Credit Mobility (ICM)
The Erasmus+ ICM programme, funded by the European Commission, allows students and academic staff to undertake study, thesis research, teaching, or training periods in non-EU countries. It includes a scholarship and coverage of travel expenses.
All activities carried out abroad will be recognized upon return by Sapienza’s academic staff, as outlined in the Learning Agreement.
Student mobility must last between 3 and 6 months, with a possible extension to 12 months (the last 6 months under the Zero-EU Grant option, without funding).
PhD-level research mobility is also eligible for ICM funding, under the same conditions.
Travel costs are calculated using the Distance Calculator, based on the distance between the home and host university locations.
