Course objectives

In consistency with the educational purposes of the whole teaching course, aim of the teaching unit is to give students a basic knowledge and comprehension skills in the field of Hebrew Language and Literature, with the help of advanced textbooks. Moreover, it will make the student able to apply the acquired knowledge in an expert and reflective way, making autonomous judgments, communicating ideas, problems and reflections in a clear and correct way, and developing the knowledge required to go further in the studies. In particular, the course aims at providing students with philological and literary analysis of Hebrew texts and questions of transmission and study of these texts.

Introduction to the biblical and contemporary Hebrew language. The alphabet; elements of morphology; rudiments of syntax. Reading and translation of selections of vocalized Jewish songs. Conversation exercises in standard Israeli Hebrew. What is Judaism. Characteristic aspects of Jewish culture. History of Jewish culture compared with other cultures. Notes on Jewish literature from antiquity to today.
