Course objectives

The course aims to provide knowledge and understanding of the methodological, critical and applicable aspects of the Discipline; it proposes general questions and specific perspectives by focusing on their interactions on a global scale; it shows the variability of fields of interest; it enables the student to master the specific topics in order to use them and apply them in other fields of study while using the correct specific language. With the acquired knowledge the student will be able to develop autonomous ability of connections with other disciplines in the various historical epochs and cultural contexts.

Program - Frequency - Exams

Course program
The programme is divided into three modules corresponding to the history from the origins to the mid-19th century of the three East Asian countries examined: China, Korea and Japan. Of each country, the history, development of the society, institutions, economy together with the original cultural and religious features will be studied with particular attention to the relations between the East Asian countries, mutual influences and connections.
Prerequisites
There are no prerequisites.
Books
Holcombe, Charles. A History of East Asia. Cambridge University Press, 2018. Further readings will be indicated during the course.
Frequency
Attendance is not compulsory but recommended.
Exam mode
The assessment methods include a written test with open-ended questions lasting 1,5 hours. The acquired knowledge will be evaluated, as well as the ability to formulate historical judgments and analysis, any presentation in ppt presented during the course will be also evaluated.
Lesson mode
The course will take place through lectures, to which students are required to take part through presentations (in ppt) and readings on specific subjects related to the course topics agreed with the teacher.
