LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE

Course objectives

The course addresses the critical and theoretical themes related to Landscape Architecture, meant as project culture and praxis concerning open space and its declinations. The course will address theoretical foundations and operative approaches in the most interesting trends that have extended the skills of this discipline in different directions, turning it into a key reflection element for the rethink of transformation modalities in human habitat. a) Knowledge and understanding The course aims at offering a sight - on a knowledge, theoretical and technical level - on the main aspects of Landscape Architecture, in its different articulations, particularly referring to the international scenario of projects and realizations: from parks to public space, to urban and extra-urban landscapes, through the use of reading instruments, the research of motivations, the knowledge of natural/artificial elements and of the main techniques that provide the specific heritage of this discipline. b) Applying knowledge and understanding Providing methodological tools so that the knowledge acquired by students can contribute to improve their design and technical skills. c) Making judgements Developing the ability of critically understanding landscape projects through the representation, the (graphic) description of the motivations, of the modes of relationship with contexts and the acknowledge of the devices and the main techniques that constitute the specific heritage of this discipline. d) Communication skills Enabling the ability to communicate the complexity of the design process and related themes, through a critical work on case studies. e) Learning skills Providing tools, methodologies and categories apt at enriching knowledge as a basis to understand the modes of transformation of human habitat.

Course program
The course is divided in lessons (10 hours), seminars (24 hours), and workshop (14 hours), dealing with: - foundations of Landscape Architecture in the Twentieth Century; - main characters of the contemporary landscape projects, individuated and analysed through case studies selected in the international context; - reading and understanding phenomena occurring in metropolitan landscapes; - critical and theoretical study on the relationship between design and the new instances of innovation, sustainability and resilience related to landscape, environment and society. Lessons aim at: - building knowledge of the main works and trends that characterize modern and contemporary landscaping - providing students with a cultural and theoretical frame in which the work of authors and trends are set in. Seminars will address: - cross-cutting themes that inspire, influence and condition landscape projects, particularly multi-trans-disciplinary issues (reading and understanding of phenomena in the contemporary metropolitan habitat; critical and theoretical study on the relationship between design and the new instances of innovation, sustainability and resilience related to landscape, environment and society). Workshop activities are directed to an active work on a critical level by the student in order to, through the use of the typical tools of landscape planners (graphic and figurative), apply critical and historical knowledge for a personal interpretation of the work of authors, of single works or themes related to contemporary landscape.
Prerequisites
Knowledge of the history of modern and contemporary architecture.
Books
Specific bibliographic references will be given during the lessons and in relation to specific topics
Frequency
Attendance is not compulsory but strictly recommended. The practical activities presented at the beginning of the course are mandatory.
Exam mode
The exam consists of an interview aimed on the topics of lectures and seminars and the presentation of products during laboratory activities and the student's self-employment. In particular, it is required: - a notebook (and presentation in ppt) - assigned exercises (critical analysis of contemporary landscape projects) The final evaluation will take into account the progress of the interview and the quality, relevance and consistency of the notebook presented.
Bibliography
Specific bibliographic references will be given during the lessons and in relation to specific topics
Lesson mode
The courses are structured in two cycles. The first cycle explores and delves into key concepts (themes and methods) deemed significant to the discipline of contemporary landscape design. The second cycle comprises a series of monographic lessons aimed at deepening understanding of certain authors who have been critically selected based on the first cycle of lessons. Besides creating critical review sheets for selected authorial projects, students will also participate in a design exercise.
