Course program
The emergency care network in the community and within the Departmental Emergency
and Admission Units.
Understanding the presenting symptom and the severity of a patient arriving for evaluation,
using clinical parameters and severity scales, identifying the main problem, and
determining treatment priorities among multiple patients.
Acute chest pain: differential diagnosis (ischemic heart disease, unstable angina, aortic
dissection) and emergency treatment. Coronary revascularization and thrombolysis.
Cardiological emergencies: life-threatening arrhythmias, bradyarrhythmias,
tachyarrhythmias, and management of thromboembolic risk; cardiac arrest; hypertensive
urgencies and emergencies; acute and chronic pericarditis; cardiac tamponade; critical
peripheral ischemia; disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC).
The patient with dyspnea: from assessment to etiological diagnosis and acute internal
medicine treatment, in collaboration with the anesthesiologist–intensivist.
Pulmonary emergencies: ARDS, acute respiratory failure types 1 and 2, asthma attack,
acute exacerbation of COPD, acute pulmonary edema, pulmonary embolism,
pneumothorax.
Acute neurological disorders: causes and differential diagnosis of acute alterations in
consciousness: presyncope, syncope, epileptic seizure, coma; cerebral stroke, treatment
protocols, cerebral hemorrhages, and hematomas.
Acute metabolic disorders: diabetic coma—differential diagnosis and treatment; acute
disturbances of acid-base and electrolyte balance; hepatic coma; acute drug or substance
intoxication.
Shock: pathophysiology, classification, diagnostic approach, differential diagnosis of the
various forms, and treatment guidelines. Multiple organ failure (MOF).
