Course objectives

At the end of the course the student must: be able to critically evaluate and correlate clinical symptoms / signs and functional alterations with the main gastrointestinal and endocrine pathologies; be able to do an anamnesis and an objective examination of the gastroenterological and endocrinological patient; be aware of the epidemiology and socio-economic impact of the main gastrointestinal and endocrine diseases.

Course program
Diseases of the hypothalamic–pituitary axis; dyslipidemias and metabolic syndrome; diabetes mellitus (classification, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and clinical presentation); acute and chronic complications of diabetes and new pharmacological treatments; hirsutism; hypo- and hyperthyroidism; dietary aspects of endocrine diseases; hypo- and hyperparathyroidism; parathyroid surgery and surgically relevant hyperparathyroidism; follicular thyroid carcinomas; medullary thyroid carcinoma; hypo- and hyperadrenalism; endocrine hypertension; hypogonadism and andropause; puberty and gynecomastia; erectile dysfunction; osteoporosis; hypoglycemic syndromes; obesity and underweight; endocrine disruptors; transgender health (endocrine aspects of gender incongruence). The course includes presentation and discussion of clinical cases in class and hands-on professional training activities, aimed at deepening and practicing topics relevant to the final examination, with a particular focus on the correlation between pathophysiological, diagnostic, and therapeutic aspects.
