Course program
Lesson 1: classroom agreement, introduction to basic concepts of parasitology (interactions between organisms and the environment, interactions between organisms in the context of symbiosis, specific terminology), zoonosis and One Health; overview of food safety and relevant regulations.
Lesson 2: Parasites transmitted through water and plants (protozoa: Giardia and Cryptosporidium; metazoans: trematodes Fasciola, cestodes Echinococcus, nematodes Ascaris).
Lesson 3: Parasites transmitted through meat (protozoa: Toxoplasma; metazoans: cestodes Taenia species, nematodes Trichinella).
Lesson 4: Parasites transmitted through fishery products (metazoans: trematodes Opisthorchis and Clonorchis, nematodes Anisakis).
Prerequisites
No fundamental prerequisites are required, but it would be helpful to have:
• Basic knowledge of general biology, particularly regarding the structure and functioning of eukaryotic cells.
• Fundamental notions of zoology and botany, with particular reference to the classification of organisms.
• General knowledge of ecology and interactions between organisms and the environment.
