SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS FOR INDUSTRY AND ENVIRONMENT

Course objectives

The educational objective of this course is to provide the student with adequate knowledge of the fundamental concepts of the chemistry of advanced materials applied to the environmental, agro-food, energy, biotechnological and cultural heritage sectors. In fact, materials are at the heart of industrial innovation and represent indispensable factors for industrial competitiveness and sustainable development. One of the most important objectives is to develop advanced materials with new functions and better performance in use, for more competitive and safer products that allow the impact on the environment and the consumption of resources to be reduced to a minimum.

Course program
Introduction to sustainability: current and future challenges and issues. Circular economy: key indicators and overview of the italian situation. Types and general properties of biopolymers. In particular, the following aspects will be studied: sources; chemical aspects, both basic and applied; structure-property relationships; main characterization techniques. Innovative and sustainable materials: Multifunctional materials; Composite materials; Nanomaterials; Hydrogels; Shape memory polymers; Smart materials; Intelligent and active food packaging materials; Materials for sustainable agriculture; Materials for the conservation of cultural heritage; Sustainable materials for the accumulation and conservation of energy; Nanostructured materials for environmental applications. Main synthetic techniques of advanced materials. Solvents and sustainability: issues and possible solutions. Ionic liquids, DES and NADES, supercritical fluids: main features and applications.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge in materials chemistry, organic chemistry and industrial chemistry

The course does not foresee the adoption of specific texts
Frequency
The frequency of the course is 4 hours per week
Exam mode
The evaluation of the acquired knowledge will be carried out by the teacher through the formulation of questions on the contents of the course program

The teacher will provide students with recent bibliographic references on the topics covered in class
