SOIL AND ROCK MECHANICS

Course objectives

Educational goals: Acquisition of competence in understanding the cause-effect relationships responsible for the stress-strain relations of geomaterials (in particular soils and rocks) through the use of elementary or combined mechanical behavior laws. Acquisition of the basic principles of soil mechanics in order to predict the behavior of this type of rock in relation to boundary variations.

Course program
(3CFU) Definition of mechanical behavior, introduction to the behavior laws (e.g. elastic, plastic, viscous) for soils and rocks, analytical exercises on mechanical behavior and its effects in terms of stress-strain also through the use of numerical analysis models (e.g. differences and finite elements). Concept of mechanical resistance for soils and rocks. Numerical exercises on the mechanical resistance of soils and rocks.
Prerequisites
Basics of applied geology and hydrogeology
Books
Soil Mechanics and Foundations Muni Buddhu – Wiley Meccanica dei Terreni T.W. Lambe, R.V. Whitman – Dario Flaccovio Ed. Geologia Applicata all’ambiente P. Canuti, U. Crescenti, V. Francani – casa Editrice Ambrosiana Geoingegneria I. Gonzalez De Vallejo – Pearson
Frequency
Attendance is not mandatory but is strongly encouraged by the teacher, especially for numerical exercises in the classroom. The teacher will provide, at the beginning of the course, a timetable with the dates on which the exercise credits required by the course will be carried out.
Exam mode
The evaluation will be done through a written exemption and, in case of passing with a grade not considered sufficient, an oral exam.
Bibliography
The teacher invites those attending the course to study and study in depth the recommended textbooks, they emphasize that the handouts made available through the Moodle platform (accessible only to those enrolled in the course) should be understood as "support" to the frontal teaching and not as a substitute for the contents of the textbooks. The teacher makes available on the Moodle platform for each topic covered several open access scientific papers that can be downloaded and should be considered as bibliographic documentation of the course.
Lesson mode
The course includes theory lessons in the classroom and numerical exercises in the classroom to be carried out in both cases in the presence of the students.
