Course program
After a general description of the topics of the course, the textbooks adopted, and the evaluation test - optional and exclusively reserved to attending students - the course will focus on the following topics:
- The origins of the modern State in Europe;
- France in the ancien régime: officers and commissioners. Origins, structure and functions of the Parlement. Origin and evolution of the General States;
- The "new" Tudor Monarchy and the specificity of the English model. Relations between Parliament and the Crown after the advent of the Stuart dynasty;
- The Puritan revolution and the Protectorate. The restoration of Charles II and the whig-tory dispute. The Glorious Revolution;
- The Holy Roman Empire of the Germanic nation in the modern age;
- The tools of absolutism in Spain. The Cortes and relations with the Church;
- The ancient Italian states: political-institutional arrangements;
- The enlightened absolutism in Europe;
- The formation of the 13 English colonies in North America and the American War of Independence. The American constituent process;
- The prodromes of the French Revolution. Revolutionary legislation and the Constitution of 1791;
- The proclamation of the Republic. From the fall of the Jacobins to the Constitution of the Directory;
- The birth of the "Sister" Republics;
- From the 18th Brumaire to the Hundred Days: the Napoleonic reforms;
- Nineteenth-century constitutionalism;
- Life and works of F. S. Salfi;
- The Italian States from Restoration to Unity.
Prerequisites
In general, a basic knowledge of the history of the modern and early contemporary ages is required. We therefore recommend the use of a history manual - XV-XIX centuries - for use by high schools as a useful support for the study of the discipline.

Frequency
Attendance is not mandatory.
Exam mode
The oral exam, which lasts about 30 minutes, is intended to ensure that the knowledge and skills relevant to the exam described above are sufficient. In order to achieve this goal, candidates will be asked at least 4 questions on different topics covered in the texts indicated in the program.
Solely for attending students will be given the opportunity to perform, at the end of the course, a written test consisting of two/three (closed stimulus and open-ended) questions on some topics covered in class. Those who obtain a vote of not less than 18/30 will be questioned on the oral exam on the rest of the program.
Lesson mode
Classes will be carried out through frontal lessons, during which the teacher will expose the topics deemed most relevant and formative of the course. Any questions from students on the topics covered during the class are encouraged at the end of the lesson.
Attendance is optional, but highly recommended.
