Course objectives
The course combines a theoretical and a pratical side: on the one hand the student will learn basic notions of grammar and syntax of the classical Arabic language and on the other had these theoretical competences will be integrated by some practical exercises - readings and dialogues - with a mother tongue teacher.

Course program
The contents of the course (6 CFU) comprehend: the alphabet and its translitteration, syllable and accent, roots and forms.
Orthography and the parts of the speech: the definite article,nouns and adjectives, pronouns (personal and pronominal suffixes), singular and plural (sound or regular) dual, the genders (masculine, feminine), the declensions (undefined and defined nouns).
The construct phrase. The nominal sentence (subject and predicate)
The triliteral verb: past and present; the verb kana: past.
This course teaches students the Arabic alphabet and the basics of MSA. The course focuses on the developing of the reading, writing and listening skills as well as the acquisition of a basic vocabulary in the main topics listed above. A detailed program of the explained topics will be provided at the end of the lessons.
Prerequisites
The course is intended for beginners (starting with learning the alphabet), and no prior knowledge of Arabic is required. An excellent knowledge of Italian grammar is essential.

During the course additional materials will be provided on specific topics covered. Before purchasing the recommended textbooks and the dictionary, students are advised to wait for specific instructions from the instructor.
Teaching mode
The course, structured according to a communicative approach, includes annual lectures, seminars and lessons with mother tongue teachers. Students will be involved in the production of simple texts and guided conversations. During the language exercises with native speakers teachers, listening, reading, comprehension and conversation activities will be carried out.
Frequency
Class attendance is highly recommended
Exam mode
It is required to pass a written exam in order to be allowed to be given an oral examination afterwards. The exam is scheduled at the end of the course, starting from the first available exam session (January-February). Exercises are planned during the lessons. The final written test consists of vocalization and understanding of an Arabic text, exercises on the various grammatical topics explained. The written exam lasts two hours, during which only the use of a dictionary is permitted. The oral exam aims at verify the quality of language learning through reading, translation and an interview in standard Arabic on the topics explained during the course.
Languages of the exams: Arabic and Italian. The assessment will be based on verifying the achievement of the educational objectives set by the course, on metalinguistic skills (awareness of the morphological and syntactic structures of the language), on the correct use of the vocabulary, grammatical structures and on the communication skills acquired by the student in the four linguistic competences .
