POLITICAL AND ECONOMIC GEOGRAPHY

Course objectives

Provide spatial interpretative tools to understandi the action of subjects in the political field in order to allow to understand the complexity and the interrelations between the different geopolitical phenomena in the territory. The theoretical framework developed through the analysis of the main authors will be applied to cases of geopolitical instability at the various scales of analysis. The student will learn the fundamental categories of political geography, in order to enhance the importance of multi-scale geopolitical analysis, of traditional and critical categories and of geopolitical dynamics in territorial processes. At the end of the course the student is expected to be able to apply the categories of political geography to the study of international reality, in order to understand crisis factors at local and regional level. Having achieved sufficient familiarity with the tools of political and economic geography, the student will be able to independently assess the geopolitical dynamics at the global and local level, the action of the great actors and political macrosystems.

Course program
First part of the course will be focused on MAIN GEOPOLITICAL THEORIES (Friedrich Ratzel, Karl Haushofer, Halford John Mackinder, Yves Lacoste) and Postmodern Theories. (ref. Spazi e poteri, part 5) Second part of the course will be on STATE, GEOGRAPHY, AND POLITICS: analysis og Outlining and geopolitical role of land and maritime borders, Manifestations of the exercise of power on the territory, Anti-state: tribes and clans.T, e role of ethnicity and religion as a factor in the states’ geopolitical actions. The new demographic dynamics in global urban geography, Manifestations of the exercise of power on the territory. The role of ethnicity and religion as a factor in the states’ geopolitical actions. The new demographic dynamics in global urban geography., media and geopolitics. This part can be referred to Spazi e poteri part 1, 2, 3. The final part ofi the course will be focused on economic geography. The main argument will be: Land grabbing and agricultural neocolonialism.Geopolitics of water and energy resources. Transport geography . The stages of development of global maritime transportation. Globalization and maritime trade. Railways through history and geopolitics. Multimodal axes. Prerequisites
Knowledge of basic notions in geography, as well as in the most recent developments in geopolitically relevant international matters, is required. In this regard, it is highly recommended that students prepare for the exam by making use not only of up to date atlases but also of specialized magazines. Visiting authoritative websites which focus on geopolitical themes is also advised.

Attendance, although not compulsory, is highly recommended
Exam mode
In the last week of the course there will be a final test with 60 multiple-choice questions on the EXAM.NET platform. Each answer will be given a mark of 0.5 points If the result of the test is greater than or equal to 18, the student will be admitted to the oral test on the volume Eurasian Scenarios only. The validity of the exoneration is limited to the winter session (January-February calls) The aim is to verify the knowledge acquired during the course of the examination, making it easier for the student to prepare for the exam The final exam may include an increase in the mark of up to 4 points in the event of an excellent oral exam result.
