Course program
Fundamentals of Interculture
The course aims to provide basic theoretical skills on all the main aspects of intercultural language mediation from an interdisciplinary perspective. It is aimed at first-year students of International Cooperation and Development (COOP) and Linguistic and Intercultural Mediation (MLI) and is divided into teaching units.
The course will cover the basics of intercultural mediation and training: concepts of identity, culture, mediation; definition of intercultural competences; portrayal of diversity in art, literature, cinema and music; birth and development of cultural stereotypes; concept of race and ethnicity; prejudice and racism related to them, in the past and in recent times; overview of the history of colonialism and migration.
The cultural universe of reference will be mainly that of Spanish-speaking Latin America, with links also to situations in Italy and other continents.

The course programme can be followed in a mode involving participation in lectures + activities, as described below.
The course is divided into teaching modules, and each module is linked to recorded lessons and classroom activities, which are listed on the e-learning platform for the course “Fundamentals of Intercultural Communication – Spanish Language 2025-2026”

Students can attend classes or watch recorded lessons, read the texts indicated in the program, and in this case, they will take a final written exam with open-ended questions on the topics covered in the different modules.
Those who participate in the activities proposed in class, with a minimum of 25, may not take the written exam or answer only part of the questions. For students of International Cooperation and Development, there will also be a final activity on Cooperation and Interculturalism, which we will carry out in class at the end of the course.
The program includes 18 lists of books, divided into thematic groups. All participants must choose one group of books. Reading groups (maximum 4/5 participants) can be organized for students who choose the same group of books. For those who make an individual choice, there will be questions in the written test. For groups, there will be an oral presentation in January 2026, to be held according to a schedule that will be published on the course's e-learning page.
The written test can be taken at any time.

La lettura può essere fatta in gruppo, e in questo caso verrà fatto un incontro con il docente in cui il gruppo dovrà presentare i libri. Teaching mode
The course of Fundamentals of Interculture is divided into twelve modules, three lessons each, each of which dedicated to the thematic Nuclei of the Course, in the following order:
1) Cooperation and Development in an intercultural key
2) The concept of cultural identity and its problems
3) Intercultural competences
4) Mediation and intercultural communication
5) Dehumanization and Conquest
6) The birth and development of stereotypes and prejudices
7) For a history of colonialisms
8) Contemporary racism
9) For a history of migration
10) The cultural "minorities"
11) Borders and cultural mestizos
12) Citizenship and Interculture
The Course will be developed through three types of activities:
-Basic theory lessons: recorded in video; the videos will be uploaded on the e-learning page of the Course on the Moodle platform
-Classroom activities on the themes of the didactic units.
-Distance activities -individual and in groups- on the topics of the teaching units
The activities carried out, in class and at a distance, constitute an element of assessment for the final grade.
Frequency
Students can attend classes or watch recorded lessons, read the texts indicated in the program, and in this case, they will take a final written exam with open-ended questions on the topics covered in the different modules.

For students of International Cooperation and Development, there will also be a final activity on Cooperation and Interculturalism, which we will carry out in class at the end of the course.
For non-attending students, the study program does not change, but students must contact the instructor at least one month before the exam to agree on the procedure.
Exam mode
The assessment will be based on participation and the results of the proposed tests.
There will be a final written test with open questions on the topics covered in the course: participation in the proposed activities may replace, in whole or in part, the answers to the test questions.
In the case of not passing the test, students can repeat it in subsequent appeals.
To pass the exam you need to achieve a grade of not less than 18/30. The student must demonstrate that he has acquired sufficient knowledge of the concepts of intercultural mediation, a basic knowledge of the main texts and authors presented in the course, and be able to situate authors and texts in their correct temporal development.
To achieve a score of 30/30 cum laude, the student must demonstrate that he has acquired excellent knowledge of all the topics covered during the course, being able to link them in a logical and consistent way.
For non-attending students the study program does not change, but students must contact the teacher at least one month before the exam to agree the way of examination.
