Course program
The ultimate goal of the workshop lecture series is to analyze living and housing through its interior spaces and by providing the essential tools for a design and spatial approach. To this end, students are asked to design a pavilion with predefined dimensions and functions, a simple and guided design of the predefined volume, for which only the interior design is required. The design of this pavilion is carried out by the student through reflection on the designs of many case studies of contemporary architecture, appropriately presented and commented on during the lessons. Reflection on the projects has the dual purpose of providing an indispensable guide for students who are encountering architecture and design for the first time and of providing an opportunity to teach them how to ‘read’ architecture in a systematic analytical and synthetic process. This exercise is therefore clearly designed to be preparatory, as a natural completion in the design phase of the sum of ideas, teachings, and suggestions that the model houses and their interior spaces have communicated to each student. The space to be designed has a predetermined size and shape: it can be imagined as an exhibition pavilion in the style of Franco Albini's pavilion, with one or two levels, within whose limits the design project must be carried out. In accordance with the ultimate objective of the course, namely the complex and articulated relationship between living and housing, the design of this small pavilion-like environment as a housing unit takes on the peculiarity of each student's housing archetype.
