DUTCH AND FLAMISH LITERATURE

Course objectives

Attaining a intermediate level in all linguistic abilities. Practicing comprehension and analysis of literary and non literary texts. At the end of the course the students will have acquired intermediate competences with regard to the development of the Dutch language, also in the earlier phases, and to the morphology, syntax and different varieties of the language. They will be able to interact in personal and professional linguistic situations and to comprehend and translate literary texts and audio material thanks to the practice lessons and the language training. Written essays, based on autonomous research, will be elicited on single aspects of the course. The items in the study programme will be discussed and analyzed in order to give students the basis for their autonomous study.

Program - Frequency - Exams

Course program
The course is composed of a 42 hrs course by the Professor. The course, held by the Professor in the second semester, deals with basic elements of narratology applied to Dutch literary texts of the twentieth century. In detail: 6 hrs general introduction to period and literary genre of the works; 6 hrs introduction to basic elements of narratological analysis; 20 hrs in-depth analysis of some literary works; 10 hrs exercises in reading and commenting pages from the original texts.
Prerequisites
Having passed the Letteratura 1 (Dutch Literature 1) oral exams.
Books
For the course by the Professor: texts and studies provided by the Professor; A. Marchese, L'officina del racconto; U. Eco, Lector in fabula; . For the language course: D. Ross, E. Koenraads, Grammatica neerlandese di base, Hoepli, Milano, 2007.
Teaching mode
The lessons of the course held by the Professor in the second semester include traditional lessons, analysis of texts in the classroom and possibly lectures held by other academics.
Frequency
Attendance is not mandatory.
Exam mode
At the end of the course imparted by the Professor the students are required to take an oral exam, with the presentation of a written essay prepared before the exam. In the oral exam they have to answer questions and discuss subjects treated by the Professor in her course and contained in the reading list. To pass the exam the mark has to reach 18/30. the student has to show he/she has reached a sufficient knowledge of the subjects treated by the Professor in her course and in the reading list, to be able to answer correctly at least at 50% of the questions contained in the written test. To obtain a full mark (30/30 e lode), the student has to prove his/her excellent knowledge of all the subjects treated in the courses, and his/her ability to establish coherent and logic connections between them.
