Czech and Slovak language I

Course objectives

An introduction to Czech and Slovak language and culture is provided, paying attention to the main trends and problems in their historical evolution in the central European context. Basic knowledge of Czech or Slovak can be acquired (A2 level). During the whole school year a Czech and a Slovak native teacher provide language exercise.

Program - Frequency - Exams

Course program
The course consists of: A) An introduction to Czech and Slovak language and culture is provided, paying attention to the main trends and problems in their historical evolution in the central European context. B) Lessons about language topics; an introduction to literary translation; history, literature and culture of the XXth century. C) Language teaching provided by a native speaker; basic knowledge of Czech or Slovak can be acquired (A2 level).
Prerequisites
No previous specific knowledge is requested, as Czech and Slovak languages and cultures are not taught in Italian schools.

Teaching mode
A) Lessons about the history of Czech and Slovak language and culture take place in the Winter semester. B) Lessons and practical seminars take place in the Summer semester. C) Language training by mother tongue teachers (about 80 hours) takes place during the whole school year; students are guided in their work (both on writing and reading). Czech grammar knowledge is trained on a contrastive basis; Slovak training takes place on the basis of a communicative approach.

Exam mode
After a written test, followed by a conversation (grammar and syntax corresponding to A2 level), an oral exam will be taken about the subjects discussed in the classes or on the basis of a list of readings previously agreed. The final evaluation takes account of the result of written test, conversation and oral exam.
