The target of the course is to teach students how to analyze and contextualize literary texts.

First year Courses are devised to lay the foundations of linguistic learning in a three-year University syllabus. Students are offered general courses on the main principles of Linguistics applied to the English language. The first aim is to divulgate portuguese and brazilian literatures from the Origins to the XVII century, i.e. the period of formation of those lusophone literatures, very rarely studied at school.
By the means of reference textbooks, explanations in classroom and a guided examination of the texts available on Moodle, the students will be enabled to read, understand and comment those texts, both in a literary-historic, thematic and formal point of view. Those capacities should be acquired as a whole, thus enabling the students to apply them to texts from other literatures.
Comparing during classes those texts with contemporary literary texts will sharpen critical and comparative capacity of criticism.
Moreover, while exposing their comment of a text or combination of texts, the students will acquire the ability of not only criticize but also express themselves, an experience useful for the final exam.

After having worked on the history of the language, on phonetic-phonological aspects, morphological and syntactic aspects, this course will complete the basic studies of the Portuguese language, studying the language from the perspective of discourse analysis. It will therefore deal with aspects of textual linguistics, semantics and pragmatics, always paying particular attention to translation studies. Thus, by the end of the course, students will have a knowledge of aspects relating to the overall meaning of a given text, broken down into its various levels of explicit and implicit meaning. They will thus have a command of complex notions applied to diverse text typologies. In the same way, students will acquire competence relevant for translating literary or technical texts, or even advertising texts, and so on. Finally, by the end of the course students will be able to link the theoretical component to the component focused on practical analysis of the cases in question; they will also develop their knowledge via the bibliography and the case studies provided as a model and methodology throughout the course.
