GREEK ANTIQUITIES

Course objectives

Students will acquire knowledge of Greek history and culture, increasing their understanding of ancient evidence, especially literary texts and epigraphic documents. By studying and discussing the sources, they will be enabled to interpret and interrelate historical narratives. This knowledge can be applied to the study of promotion and pedagogy of cultural heritage, developing the ability to formulate judgments autonomously, coordinating and contextualising the topics professionally, making a correct use of the available bibliography, and being able to carry out research on the specific aspects of the disciplinary sector to tourist studies.

Course program
This course provides an introduction to the history of Ancient Greece and Greek civilization. Particular attention will be devoted to the analysis of key aspects of life in the Greek city-states (poleis), examined within their historical development, with reference to politics and institutions, society, economy, and religion. In this context, major historical phenomena will be discussed, such as the emergence of the polis, the adoption of the Greek alphabet, the Greek colonization, the birth of democracy, and the concept of Hellenism. The course will make systematic use of primary sources, both written (literary and epigraphic) and archaeological, which will be analyzed and discussed in class. The first section of the course (12 hours) will focus on defining Greek identity and the spatial and temporal framework of Greek civilization (geography and natural resources; periodization of Greek history), as well as on an introduction to the principal historical sources for the study of the ancient Greek world. The second section (30 hours) will trace the main stages in the historical development of Greece, with further exploration of selected topics.

The prerequisites established by the degree program in Tourism shall apply.

Frequency
Attendance is strongly recommended.
Exam mode
A test is scheduled at the end of this course: it is an oral exam with open-ended questions. The student must demonstrate that he has achieved the expected learning outcomes in relation to the themes of the Syllabus. The oral exam will consist of 4-5 questions on the topics described in the Syllabus. In order to obtain an evaluation of 30/30, the student must demonstrate that he has acquired in an excellent way the expected learning outcomes.
