Course objectives

The overall aim of the course is to provide the theoretical and methodological tools that allow knowing the different therapeutic approaches to psychopathology, as well as the salient aspects concerning evidence-based knowledge of psychopathology, favouring the development of critical skills. The laboratory will address the main basics of counselling (e.g. how to conduct a clinical and a motivational interview, active listening, counselling programs) through active learning, roleplaying, etc.

Course program
The first part of the course will focus on psychological assessment, with particular attention to initial clinical interviews and techniques useful for gathering key information necessary for an accurate analysis of the client’s request. Seminars will also be organized to foster a critical approach to diagnosis and intervention in neurodevelopmental disorders in adulthood (e.g., autism and ADHD). The second part of the course will focus on the study of emotions in their normal and pathological aspects, with particular emphasis on emotional regulation techniques that can be applied in psychological support settings (e.g., problem-solving). The course will include the use of demonstrative videos and in-class practical exercises. The lab will address the fundamental principles and tecquines of psychological counseling (e.g., methods for conducting interviews, active listening, motivational interviewing, and counseling programs in various health contexts) through active learning methods such as simulations, role-playing, and more.
