SOCIOLOGY OF SOCIALIZATION AND EDUCATIONAL PROCESSES

Course objectives

1. Knowledge and understanding: after having passed the exam students should know the main concepts and methods of the sociology of education with particular reference to: socialization and educational processes, the sources of sociological knowledge in education, the sociology of education: from the classics to the contemporary topics, the relationship between education and society, the main studies in education and socialization; practice and learning between education and work, the main perspectives for the study of educational, socialization and professional learning processes in contemporary society 2. Applying knowledge and understanding: after having passed the exam students should be able to: distinguish the different theoretical perspectives in the study of educational and socialization processes, orientate themselves in the literature related to education; distinguish qualitative and quantitative methods in educational research; define research questions related to the role of education in contemporary society; project and carry out small educational research in the empirical field; produce an extensive bibliography on the educational topics. 3. Critical faculties should be developed participating in group activities, making decisions with others, expressing personal ideas in group discussions, experience in which to learn how to distinguish one's own judgment in the debate and recognizing the positions of others in the debate. 4. Communications skills. The ability to communicate what was learned should be developed being able to: draw up a text, prepare a bibliography, make a presentation in the classroom coordinate a discussion in a public debate 5. Learning skills. The ability to continue studying the topics should be developed being able to recognize the positions present in public debates, develop research questions address methodologies in the field, develop qualitative and quantitative research skills.

Course program
Students will learn the main perspectives for the study of educational processes. The course aims to provide knowledge of the main concepts and methods of the sociology of education with special reference to: - socialization and educational processes - the sources of sociological knowledge in education - the sociology of education: from classics to contemporaries - the relationship between education and society in society - the main research in education and socialization - practice and learning between education and work - educational practices and contemporary theories The course will be conducted in an active learning mode. For attending students, intermediate written tests and a final group work will be conducted. For non-attending students, a written and oral examination will be conducted to check the study done on the examination texts.
Prerequisites
Basic skills in sociology and research methodology are required to attend this course.
