LABORATORIO DI INGLESE SPECIALISTICO
THE COURSE
The Advanced English Lab is designed for students with an intermediate to advanced level of English.
Ideally you should be at B2, but a B1+ paired with a hearty dose of good will and sustained effort can also lead to success in the course.
The document The level of English you are expected to have on entry explains:
a. what is expected of you in terms of English language competence;
b. how you can audit your skills in English using the CEFR grid.
You will also find advice on resources you can use before the course starts in semester 2, should you feel that you need to strengthen certain areas and improve specific skills.
This laboratory uses English as a working language to explore issues linked to your main area of study.
You will be challenged to research, guide your learning process, and take responsibility for your own and your peers’ progress.
Specifically, the Learning Objectives of the course are to:
• Engage with English as a working language in academic and professional contexts, using it as a tool for inquiry, collaboration, and presentation.
• Investigate and critically discuss issues related to gender equality and social sustainability, drawing on research and case studies you select.
• Design and produce academic outputs (reports, abstracts, presentations, project proposals) in English that reflect the methods and concerns of your field.
• Analyse and respond to texts in English, paying attention to tone, style, register, and nuance.
• Take responsibility for learning by leading discussions, sharing research, and contributing actively to a collaborative environment.
The learning objectives are aligned to the assessment strategies, which will require you to:
• Present and defend a research-informed project in English with clarity, structure, and critical awareness.
• Produce a well-structured abstract and methodology in English, following academic conventions in your field.
• Contribute to peer learning by giving constructive feedback in English on the work of colleagues.
This is not a traditional language course. English here is the medium of exploration and expression: you will be using it to research, to argue, to collaborate, and to present your work.
THE EXAM
The exam is structured around the analysis and discussion of a student-selected project relevant to their field of study. Students may choose between a language-based or research-based project.
- Language-Based Project: Students select and analyse a small selection of articles (from newspapers, academic works, or multimedia) on a topic related to their field. The analysis will focus on linguistic aspects such as style, register, tone, rhetorical strategies, and visual features, with a view to reflect on how linguistic and stylistic choices orient the readers' perception of the topic.
- Research-Based Project: Students select a topic, formulate a research question, and present the results of their research during the oral exam.
The exam consists of two main components:
- Written Component: This section requires students to submit an abstract that summarises the key points of the project, as well as a methodology section that outlines the development of the presentation. The methodology should explain how sources were selected, what the initial hypothesis was, and describe the process of preparing the presentation, including analysis of the data found. The written portion must be submitted via Classroom no later than 12 noon on the day before the oral exam.
- Oral Component: the oral presentation of the project findings.
STUDENTS NOT ATTENDING THE COURSE (NON FREQUENTANTI) are advised to discuss their project proposal with me beforehand.
Please refer to the FAQs sheet for additional information about the exam.
